It goes without saying that a big part of working for a community newspaper is forming good relationships with members in the community which is what I did working for Northglen News (www.northglennews.co.za), covering the North Durban area. Writing area-specific stories I got to know the community leaders, organisations and residents well and I unearthed a number of unique stories including the formation of the now nationally-known band, Gangs of Ballet and the Mongol Derby adventure undertaken by local humanitarian, Paul Erskine (www.paulerskine.co.za).
